Your First Steps: What to Expect from an Initial Meeting with a Marketer

When setting up an initial meeting with a marketer, it's important to find someone you can trust.

When setting up an initial meeting with a marketer, it's important to find someone you can trust.

You’ve recently decided you need a new website, logo, branding, print material, social media presence, or all of the above. You want a professional; someone you can trust to care for your business like you do and who isn’t just in the business for the bottom line. You’re currently doing as much research as you can before you make a decision about hiring a marketer, but you’re not sure what to expect. Take a deep breath. We’ve been where you are and we want to make the process as stress-free for you as possible. The first step is to set up a free initial meeting with us, and once you do, this is what to expect.

Casual Conversation

When you walk into our office for an initial meeting, you will be talking to one or two of our friendly team members. To learn a little more about the members of our team before the meeting, you can do so here.

During your free initial meeting, we aren’t trying to sell you anything. We are trying to get to know you, your company, and your goals for your company. We want to figure out what you want and how we can help you meet your goals. No company who walks through our door has the same needs, and we don’t want to suggest anything that will not be useful to your business.

Lots of Questions

meeting with a marketerWe ask a lot of questions, but don’t stress out! This is not a pop quiz and all of the questions we ask will be questions you already know, because you are the expert in your business. Our questions will vary depending on what you are looking for from us, but here are some examples:

  • Who are your business’s best clients?
  • What areas of the business do you want to grow?
  • What are the most profitable areas of your business?
  • Exactly what services will you be providing and what do you want to emphasize?
  • Who are your competitors?
  • What are your goals for the website?
  • What do they want people to DO once they get to the website?
  • What are some key terms your customers use? What are some terms to stay away from?

meeting with a marketerIn the early stages of a project, it helps to think about the big picture. However, if a marketer gets carried away with big ideas your business isn’t ready for or with technical marketing terms you do not understand, say so. Sometime marketers get overly excited when thinking about all the possibilities for your business. You will neither offend anyone nor seem ignorant by asking for clarification.

Within a week or two of our initial conversation, you will hear back from the teammate you met with. This gives them time to do research into your business, your best clientele, what we can do for you and how much it will cost us to do it. You might receive an emailed proposal, or we might request to meet with you in person to go over a proposal that has been drafted.

Once you receive the proposal, the next step is up to you! You can agree to the initial proposal and we can get right to work on your project, you can ask more clarifying questions and take some time to consult with your business partners, or maybe you decide your business isn’t ready to partner with a marketing agency. Whichever your situation, there is no uncomfortable pressure from us to sign a contract, but we are always available to talk more about it.
