“Real world experience.” Now this is a phrase with a lot of connotations. As a junior in college, I have heard this phrase stressed, fantasized, pushed, promoted, and hyped up. Quite frankly, the idea of it is very intimidating. It’s something vitally necessary to succeed in the next stage of life—whatever that stage may be. My peers are terrified of it, and my superiors try to prepare me for it. But what exactly is “it”?
I define real-world experience as any event in which we accumulate knowledge and develop skills necessary for us to succeed tomorrow. Every time we gain this sort of wisdom, it acts as a stepping stone to our next stage of life. Over a long amount of time, and through many different experiences, each one of those stepping stones starts to lead you in the direction you should go.
This is exactly what my experience at Treefrog Marketing has been for me. At Treefrog, I have accumulated knowledge and developed skills in areas of writing that I had never tapped into before. Furthermore, I have seen the strengths that I have always possessed honed and developed in ways I didn’t know possible. It’s one thing to have natural talent, but it’s another when you take the time to focus in and build those abilities into something far greater than before. In this sense, Treefrog has been a stepping stone that has helped lead me to my next stage of life.
Looking back on my time here as a content intern, I realize that I have not had a real-life experience nearly as hands-on or integrated in the everyday, professional world. My time at Treefrog has helped me immensely in understanding what exactly it is that I want to do with my own personal set of skills and passions, and it has been very helpful in directing me towards a future career. This was an insight that I struggled to find until now.
Anyone who’s been to school, no matter what grade, knows that sinking feeling they get in their gut when a teacher or professor announces that an assignment will be a team project. And the simple explanation to that feeling is that, put bluntly, team projects can be a pain.
Through my time at Treefrog, I have come to realize that real-world experience will always involve collaborating with teams. This just goes to show how vitally important this skill is. Take it from someone who loves to work solo: team projects are your friend! Because every workplace, committee, and future career will involve a lot of people—and despite what some may like to think, that is a very good thing! My time at Treefrog has affirmed the idea that it takes many different personalities and input to bring about a single piece of successful content.
As intimidating as it might be, real-world experience is entirely worth the uncertainty. The honest truth is that it’s incredibly scary to put your own work and passions up for review and out into this “real world.” But, it’s also impossible to not grow from it and learn something while doing so. And if we’re learning and growing, then it has to be worth the risk.
My time at Treefrog Marketing has shown me that in order to grow closer towards achieving and understanding your goals, you need to be willing to put yourself out there. Apply to a job you would never usually consider, or take active steps toward a crazy dream of yours. No matter what it is, do it and do it to the best of your ability. It’s very likely that you’ll gain some sort of “real world experience” along the way that will become invaluable later in life.
I am incredibly grateful to call Treefrog Marketing a part of my journey towards my professional dreams and aspirations. This has been a real-world experience unlike any other for me thus far, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next!
