As a soon-to-be college graduate, in an extremely competitive field I may add, I knew finding an internship my senior year was going to be key. I have always had a passion for writing and storytelling, so when I discovered communication, I instantly knew it was the right fit. I love Purdue, don’t get me wrong, but there was something lacking in my education that I knew only real-world experience could fill. That’s when I found Treefrog. When I was offered the semester-long content internship, I never would have guessed I would learn as much as I did. Here are some irreplaceable lessons from my semester as a Treefrogger.
This seems like a give-in, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t love going to work everyday. On my first day at Treefrog, I honestly didn’t know what to expect as this was my first out of the classroom experience. I never would have guessed an office environment could be so fun and encouraging.
From coffee shop trips to Treefrog lunch to the great music playlists, there was never a dull moment at Treefrog. Sure, having some fun is important in the office, but make sure you surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed. I truly felt like everyone was on my team and wanted to help me grow in my career. The people you work with can make or break a great job. Choose wisely!
As an introvert, I tend to retract into my shell and focus on what I need to get done for the day. I’ve never been one to speak up, but my semester at Treefrog has truly grown me in this way. How can we learn if we don’t ask questions? Answer: you can’t. This semester I’ve learned more than I thought possible because I decided I was going to ask questions and take full advantage of the opportunity.
Treefrog is home to some very talented, smart, and driven people. How could I not take advantage of working with them every week? If you get nothing else from reading this blog, remember this; be a sponge. Soak up all the advice, information, and learning experiences you can.
In the communication field, it is all about experience, experience, and, you guessed it, more experience. A portfolio is a great way to show a potential employer that you have experience and actually have examples of work you’ve done. My time at Treefrog expanded my portfolio more than I ever thought it could. I went from having a few pieces to share, to now having samples on samples of materials to show. From blogs to social media posts to newsletters, my skills have improved and I have the work to prove it. I can’t stress enough the importance of having a solid portfolio!
Last but certainly not least, feedback and critiques are your best friend. With every comment, edit, and critique, you improve. As mentioned before, I’ve always loved writing and always felt like I was a solid writer, but my time at Treefrog taught me there is always room for improvement. For each project, I received edits, suggestions, and critiques from those talented, great people I mentioned before. I’ve always been good at taking feedback and criticism, but I never really knew how beneficial it could be. With each edit, I learned something new and I can honestly say I am a better writer after my time at Treefrog. Advice; learn to love feedback.
With only a few weeks left of my college career and my future of truly “adulting” approaches, I am thankful for my time at Treefrog and all that it has taught me. I have loved my college experience and am blessed to have attended such a great university. You may ask, “would I change anything if I could do it all over again?” Yes, I would take advantage of interning at places like Treefrog much sooner.
