Contrary to the title, this is not going to be about food (although Treefroggers do take food very seriously) or music (although quality music jams are apart of our daily work day). Instead, this is going to be about the Job, the Atmosphere, and the Moxie I felt grateful to be apart of these last four months at Treefrog.
My senior year, I graduated a semester early in December. My plan was to stay on Purdue’s campus to gain more work experience. I didn’t want to work in a coffee shop, I didn’t want to answer phones, I wanted to enhance the skills that would help me in my career down the road. I wanted to have fun while doing it and meet some amazing people along the way. Little did I know, there was a little three-story office down on Main Street that fit those expectations and more. When I was job searching, I saw the words ‘Content Intern.’ Being a writer for a few years prior, it caught my attention, I went for it, and here we are.
The job is your title; it’s how you define your days and weeks; it’s your answer to “What do you do?” It’s so important to love whatever that answer is and be passionate about it. When you’re passionate about what happens in the workplace, it shows in your demeanor, in the product of your work, and it creates this self-driven attitude that will lead you to success!
Lesson number one: Love what you do.
I’ve always believed that the work created by a group of people is a direct product of the atmosphere in which it was created. Every business has its people. But what differentiates them is the way their minds work. As a result, an atmosphere is created. It is something that is unique to individual workplaces. Treefrog’s combination of innovation, collaboration, and productivity breeds success and allows all members to fully engage in teamwork and communication. Between that, our Treefrog lunches, walks, and celebrations of each other, we have a pretty special place here, because it’s those things that bring and hold people together.
Lesson number two: Immerse yourself into your workplace atmosphere to see what you can contribute and what you can gain.
First off, what is moxie? Moxie (n): courage, vigor, nerve. Synonyms: boldness, fearlessness, spunk, stamina, braveness…you get the picture, right? In this industry, you need moxie. When you have moxie, so will your work. Social media, technology, new tools, new ways to deliver information – it all develops so fast, and we’re expected to keep up! Advertisers and marketers (a.k.a. us) face the challenge of consumers constantly scrolling down their social media feeds. At Treefrog, it’s our job to represent our clients and do good work for them. But we also work on branding ourselves and being the best marketing firm out there for small businesses. We’ve been motivated to try the new thing, take the risk, and cross our fingers that the message resonates with someone. We may be small, but we are a group of powerful minds.
Lesson number three: Don’t underestimate the unknown, and own your moxie.
So, Treefrog, thank you for the lessons, the adventures, experiences, and relationships! I walk away now feeling not only more valuable to my industry, but a better person having known this team and establishing another place to call home. Ending my college career with this internship has been a spectacular experience that I will never forget. Once a Treefrogger, always a Treefrogger!
